I could have never asked for a better place to do my internship program. The hospitable and empowering environment of WAO is beyond what I expected it to be. I can say wholeheartedly that these were the best, insightful  3 months I have spent working up-close with some of the most kind-hearted, powerful and intelligent people in Malaysia. This outstanding NGO has truly taught me the value of teamwork, commitment, love, passion, hard-work and drive. I pray that this NGO continues to grow in strength and support in the upcoming years.

As an intern with WAO’s advocacy team, I was given the opportunity to contribute to interesting and important research projects and reports, including collecting data and interviews from other women’s organisations and copy editing the 2018 NGO Alternative Report to the UN Committee on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). I couldn’t recommend interning with WAO highly enough – you will be supported by the amazing staff to extend and deepen your knowledge of women’s rights while making a real difference. In fact, I enjoyed my time at WAO so much that I extended my internship!

My internship at WAO allowed me to better understand the realities of gender-based violence and discrimination in Malaysia and it truly strengthened my belief that we need to continue working towards a gender equal society. It was very humbling and inspiring to work alongside some of the most determined and selfless people I have ever met.

I also really loved the fact that the internship was well structured. The main project that I was assigned to was to write a policy brief on why Malaysia needs a Gender Equality Commission and Tribunal. My project coordinator was very patient in reviewing each and every draft I made along the way and despite his busy schedule, he made it a point to provide me with feedback. My short time with the WAO family was definitely an unforgettable experience.
